Marrakech to Essaouira: the road, the time and your options

Updated 2026-10-29

Short answer

Essaouira is 183 km from Marrakech, about 2 h 40 by car on the N8 to Chichaoua and then the R207. A private transfer costs 1,200 MAD per car for up to 3 guests. A day trip with a driver costs 1,850 MAD and gives you four to five hours in town. There is no train.

The route

From Marrakech the road runs west on the N8 to Chichaoua, then the R207 takes you the rest of the way to the coast. After the Chichaoua interchange it is a two-lane road, with long straight stretches across dry plains.

In the last part before Essaouira the argan trees start, and some drivers stop at a women's argan oil cooperative on this stretch.

The drive takes about 2 h 40 without stops. Most people take one break for coffee or photos.

The goats in the trees

Goats do climb argan trees to eat the fruit, usually one or two at a time while the herd grazes below. The trees full of goats you see right beside the road are a different matter: herders often place the goats there and expect a tip when you take photos.

If you stop, agree the tip first. If you would rather not pay for posed goats, tell your driver and they will carry on.

Arriving in Essaouira

Essaouira is a walled Atlantic port, formerly Mogador. Its medina has been on the UNESCO list since 2001. Hotels outside the walls get a door drop-off.

For a riad inside the medina, the driver stops at the nearest gate or car park and a porter or someone from the riad brings the bags in. Ask your riad which entrance is closest and send it to us when you book.

Bring a jacket. The coast is windy and cooler than Marrakech.

Transfer or day trip

A one-way transfer suits you if you are staying in Essaouira: 1,200 MAD by sedan, 1,550 MAD by van for up to 7, 1,750 MAD by minibus for up to 16. The driver can collect you from Marrakech airport and drive straight there.

A day trip costs 1,850 MAD by sedan. You leave in the morning, spend four to five hours walking the ramparts, the medina and the fishing harbour, and come back in the evening. It is a long day, but a full one.

If you have a free night, stay. The town is quieter once the day visitors leave, and you break the driving into two easy halves.

Travelling as a family or group

A sedan takes 3 guests and 3 large suitcases. More guests need the van, 1,550 MAD for up to 7, which costs less than two sedans. A minibus for up to 16 costs 1,750 MAD.

With children, Chichaoua is the usual place for a break, roughly an hour out of Marrakech. Child seats are available on request; give the children's ages when you book.

Other ways to go

There is no railway to Essaouira; plans for a line exist, but no trains run today. A private car leaves when you want, stops where you ask and takes you to the gate nearest your riad, which matters when you arrive with suitcases.

Flying home from Marrakech

If your flight leaves Marrakech on the day you leave Essaouira, book the transfer straight to the airport rather than to a hotel. The driver collects you at your hotel door or at the medina gate where you arrived.

Allow the full 2 h 40 for the drive, a stop, and the check-in time your airline asks for. The office suggests a pickup time when it confirms in writing.
