Marrakech to Ouarzazate by road
The N9 crosses the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka at 2,260 m. Taddert, among walnut groves below the pass, is the usual stop on the way up. After the pass the land turns dry and stony, and the road runs down past the Aït Benhaddou turn-off to Ouarzazate.
The N9 meets the N10 in Ouarzazate, so it is the turning point for the Draa valley to the south and the Dades valley to the east.
Is there a flight from Marrakech to Ouarzazate?
No. Ouarzazate airport's scheduled flights come from Casablanca, with Royal Air Maroc. Flying from Marrakech would mean reaching Casablanca first, which takes longer than the drive.

What to see in Ouarzazate
Atlas Studios, on the edge of town, has hosted films such as Gladiator. The Taourirt kasbah in the centre was a seat of the Glaoui family during the French protectorate.

Practical tips
Buy water and snacks in Marrakech or at Taddert before the pass. If anyone gets carsick, take tablets before you leave and ask for a front seat.
From late November to early March, snow can close the Tichka for short spells. Message the office the day before you travel in winter.
Going further
Ouarzazate is the usual overnight stop on the way to Zagora, the Dades valley, the Todra gorge and Merzouga. If you are heading to the desert, ask about the Zagora or Merzouga trips; the driver stays with you for the whole route.
Best time to go
Spring and autumn are the easiest months on this road. Summer is hot on the south side of the Atlas, so leave Marrakech early and cross the pass before midday.
In winter the pass is cold even on sunny days, and snow can close it for short spells. Pack a warm layer in the car whatever the forecast in Marrakech says.
