Marrakech to Imlil by road

The first part is flat. After the plain the R203 climbs through the Moulay Brahim gorge to Asni, about 45 minutes from Marrakech. Just past Asni a small roundabout marks the turn for Imlil, and a tarmac road climbs the valley on tight bends to the village.

An ordinary car manages the road. The bends after Asni are where people feel sick, so take motion-sickness tablets before you leave if you need them, and sit facing forward.

Stops on the way

Asni's market runs on Saturdays and is worth half an hour if you travel that day. Tell the driver when you want to stop for photos in the Moulay Brahim gorge.

Bring your trekking kit from home or buy it in Marrakech; the road has village shops, not outdoor stores.

Arriving in Imlil

The tarmac ends at a small car park at the lower edge of the village. Many lodges sit higher up on footpaths, and mule handlers wait at the car park to carry bags. Tell your lodge your arrival time and they send someone down.

If you start a Toubkal trek the next morning, arrive by mid-afternoon. You meet your guide, sort your bags and get an early night.

Best time to go

Spring and autumn are the main trekking seasons. In winter the upper mountain holds snow and the village gets cold at night; pack warm layers even if Marrakech is mild. Summer days in the village are warm.

Leave Marrakech early in the morning in summer. You arrive before the midday heat and have the afternoon to walk.

Coming back down after a trek

Book both legs together and give the day you expect to come down. Treks run late or finish early; message the office on WhatsApp when your guide confirms the time, and the driver meets you at the same car park.

If you fly the same day, leave a wide margin. The drive is about 1 h 20, and trekkers often come off the mountain later than planned.
