An Atlantic city built around the Portuguese City of Mazagan, a 16th-century fortress town on the UNESCO list since 2004.
El Jadida is 198 km from Marrakech, about 3 h 10 by road north across the plains. You can go by train too, but you change in the Casablanca area and the trip takes longer. A private transfer costs 1,300 MAD per car for up to 3 guests and stops at your hotel or the gate of the old Portuguese city.

Direct, no change, with your bags in the boot.
You change trains in the Casablanca area. Comfortable if you travel light.
A bus to Casablanca and a second one to El Jadida. The cheapest way, and the slowest.
Not as a rule. Trains from Marrakech run north towards Casablanca, and you change in the Casablanca area for the El Jadida line. With the wait, the trip takes longer than the drive.
If you travel alone with a small bag, the train is a fine option. With suitcases or as a family, one car is simpler: 1,300 MAD for up to 3 guests and 3 large suitcases, or 1,700 MAD by van for up to 7.
The Portuguese City of Mazagan, a 16th-century fortress town, has been on the UNESCO list since 2004. Walk the ramparts, then go down into the vaulted Portuguese cistern, the best-known sight in town.
The Manueline Church of the Assumption, also from the Portuguese period, stands inside the walls. The old city is small; two or three hours on foot covers the ramparts, the cistern and the lanes between them.
El Jadida from 1,300 MAD per car
The price is fixed before you travel. The office confirms it in writing.
For a hotel, at the entrance. For a guesthouse inside the Portuguese walls, at the nearest gate, because the lanes inside are narrow. Send the name and map pin with your booking.
Spring and autumn are mild and quieter than the summer holidays. The coast is cooler than Marrakech all year, so bring a layer for the evening.
Leave Marrakech mid-morning and you arrive in time for lunch and an afternoon in the old city.
Oualidia is down the coast and Casablanca is up it. Some guests drive Marrakech to Oualidia, then on to El Jadida and Casablanca for a flight. Ask for each leg when you book and the office confirms them together.
For a flight from Mohammed V airport after a stay in El Jadida, book the airport leg on its own. The office sets the pickup time from your flight and the check-in time your airline asks for.
North across the plains on fast roads, then west to the coast.
At your hotel entrance, or at the nearest gate for a guesthouse inside the old Portuguese walls.
Ask for a photo stop or lunch on the way when you book. Short stops are free; a longer detour is added to the written price.
