Casablanca in pictures

Casablanca (2)

Morocco's largest city and business centre, home of the Hassan II Mosque, part of which stands over the Atlantic.

Casablanca is 240 km from Marrakech, about 2 h 50 on the toll motorway. You can take the train, which runs about every hour and takes around 2 hours 40 minutes to 3 hours, or a private transfer at 1,500 MAD per car for up to 3 guests, door to door. For two or more people with bags, the car often costs less than it first looks.

Train or car from Marrakech to Casablanca

The train is the obvious choice if you travel alone with a small bag. It leaves Marrakech station roughly every hour, and you can buy a ticket on oncf-voyages.ma or at the station.

With three or more people, add up the train tickets, a taxi to Marrakech station and a taxi across Casablanca at the other end. Then compare that with one vehicle to the door without changes: 1,500 MAD by sedan for up to 3, 1,950 MAD by van for up to 7.

The motorway

The toll motorway runs north across flat farmland most of the way. There are no mountains and few bends, so it is an easy drive for children and anyone who gets carsick.

Service areas on the motorway have fuel, coffee and toilets. On a drive of about 2 h 50, most drivers stop once.

Arriving in Casablanca

Traffic slows down as you reach the city, more so at the morning and evening rush hours. If your plans allow, avoid arriving in the weekday evening rush.

The driver drops you at the address you give: a hotel, an office, a home or a station. If you have a meeting, tell the office the time you need to arrive, not the time you want to leave.

What to see

The Hassan II Mosque stands partly over the Atlantic and is the main sight for visitors. The seafront Corniche is the walk most people add.

If you are only passing through on the way to Rabat or the airport, a stop at the mosque fits into the day. Ask the office to add it when you book.

Practical tips

For a flight from Mohammed V airport, book the airport transfer instead; the airport is south of the city, so you reach it before Casablanca itself.

A pickup between 23:00–04:59 carries a 20% supplement. Early-morning starts let you beat the city traffic at the other end.
