Agafay Desert in pictures

Agafay Desert (2)Agafay Desert (3)

A stony desert of bare hills southwest of Marrakech, with tented camps, camel rides and quad routes, and the High Atlas behind on clear days.

The Agafay camps are 28 km southwest of the Medina, about 35 min by car, and no bus or train goes there. Most guests take a private transfer: 550 MAD per car for up to 3 guests, 700 MAD by van. The driver takes you to the camp reception, including the gravel stretch at the end.

How to get to the Agafay desert from Marrakech

You leave the city on the southwest side and cross flat farmland before the road climbs into bare, stony hills. Most camps sit off the tarmac on gravel tracks, and those tracks have few signs. Send us the camp's map pin when you book; it saves a phone call on the hillside.

The driver can collect you at Marrakech airport and go straight to the camp. The price is the same as from a Marrakech hotel.

Arriving at the camp

The driver stops at reception or the car park, and camp staff carry the bags to your tent. If you arrive for sunset, aim to be there an hour before it so you have time to check in and walk up a ridge.

Sunset is the main event in Agafay: the hills turn pink and orange, and short camel rides run at that hour. Quad and buggy outings run in the day.

Agafay Desert from 550 MAD per car

The price is fixed before you travel. The office confirms it in writing.

Best time to go

Spring and autumn are the busy seasons, so book the camp early for those months. Midday sun is strong all year, and nights get cold even in summer. Pack a jacket or a warm jumper for dinner outside.

On clear winter days you see snow on the High Atlas from the camps, which is the best view Agafay has.

Agafay and Lalla Takerkoust in one trip

The Lalla Takerkoust lake is close to the camps, so you can stop for lunch by the water on the way. Ask for the stop when you book; the office confirms the price with it in writing.

If you only want a sunset and dinner, book the Agafay afternoon excursion (1,200 MAD) instead of a one-way transfer. The driver waits and brings you back to Marrakech after dinner.

Practical tips

Leave big suitcases in Marrakech if you stay one night; a small bag is easier in a tent. Bring a torch or use your phone light for the paths between tents after dark.

A pickup between 23:00–04:59 carries a 20% supplement.

Good to know

  • Agafay is rock and dust hills, not sand dunes.
  • Most camps sit on gravel tracks off the tarmac.
  • Snow on the High Atlas peaks is visible from the camps on clear winter days.
  • It is 28 km from the medina, about 35 min by road.

The drive

Out of the city to the southwest through farmland, then into bare, stony hills; the last stretch to most camps is on gravel.

Where the driver stops

At the camp entrance or reception. Camps sit off gravel tracks, so send the camp's map pin with your booking.

Stops on the way

Ask for a photo stop or lunch on the way when you book. Short stops are free; a longer detour is added to the written price.
