Marrakech to the Ourika valley

You head southeast across the plain, then the road enters the Ourika valley and follows the river upstream. The valley narrows as you climb, with villages, terraced fields and riverside cafés along the last stretch to Setti Fatma, where the road ends.

Tnine Ourika, near the start of the valley, holds a big rural market on Mondays. If you travel that day, stop in the morning, when it is busiest.

Walking to the waterfalls

Seven waterfalls sit above the village. Most visitors walk to the first one, on a rocky path beside the stream. Wear shoes with grip; sandals slip on the wet rocks.

Local guides wait in the village for the higher falls. You pay them directly, so agree the price before you start.

Setti Fatma (Ourika Valley) from 550 MAD per car

The price is fixed before you travel. The office confirms it in writing.

Best time to go

The valley is higher and cooler than Marrakech, which makes it a summer escape. Weekdays are quieter than weekends.

Between November and March, heavy rain can flood the valley road. If rain is forecast, message the office the day before; the driver will not take the car up a flooded road.

Practical tips

Bring cash for the cafés and guides in the village. A small bag with water and a layer is enough for the falls.

For a one-way transfer to a guesthouse in the valley, send its name and map pin. Several guesthouses sit off the road on footpaths, and the driver stops at the nearest point the car can reach.

Day trip or one-way transfer

If you sleep in Marrakech, book the Ourika day trip at 900 MAD. The driver waits in the village while you walk and brings you back in the afternoon, so you do not depend on the last shared taxi down.

Book the one-way transfer at 550 MAD if you stay a night or two in the valley. Book the return leg at the same time and give the day; the office sends a car to the same spot.
